Long Pose on Toned Paper

30 hours from the live model on Saturdays

Instructor: Emmy De Musis

Beginning in graphite, students complete a 'cartoon'. This is a preliminary drawing that establishes proportion, body type, gesture and the correct grouping of light and dark. This important phase creates a solid structure.

Students then transfer the cartoon to toned paper and the drawing continues in graphite and chalk. The instructor will assist students in choosing an area of the figure to fully render. Through the articulation of subtle plane changes and correct value assignments, the students work towards a naturalistic and volumetric drawing.

The instructor will provide individual critiques, demos and lectures.

Class runs on Saturdays from 9:30am to 12:30pm  for 10 weeks. Sept. 14th - Nov. 16th

Tuition $400

Prerequisite: ARA Figure Construct Class attendance and comprehension.

Figure Construct Class

Instructor: Emmy De Musis

Rendering the human form is the most difficult task in drawing and the beginning stages of construction are the most important. This 8 week course will address the early stage and it's challenges. Working from the nude model, students will be given a step-by-step system that will improve their ability to accurately capture gesture, proportion and body type.  From this general block-in, students will advance towards an exploration of the figure's specific contour and shadow line. Poses will range from  three to six hours. Students will receive individual attention and work at their own pace.

All levels are welcome.  Call or email to register.

Class runs on Saturdays from 1:00pm - 4:00pm for 8 weeks. Sept. 14th  - Nov. 2nd.

Tuition: $325

The Academy of Realist Art

The Academy of Realist Art is a private academy that teaches drawing and painting in the old master tradition. The curriculum uses teaching techniques that are modeled on those of 19th Century European academies. Our step-by-step process teaches the important skills for representational painting.

Our curriculum is a 4-level program that, when completed, equips the graduate to confidently approach and overcome the most difficult projects in drawing and painting.

Students are taught individually in a group setting. Each student is guided, at his or her own pace, through assignments. The Academy in Boston is small and supportive with concepts and critiques offered by instructors who are atelier trained. Our students are respectful and helpful to one another.

ARA offers an intensive program granting a certificate in traditional drawing and painting upon graduation. One of the few such institutions in the world. ARA has a curriculum designed to produce the highest caliber of professional artists. We are an ARC Accredited atelier. We are affiliated with the Academy of Realist, Toronto Canada www.academyofrealistart.com

We offer guided tours by appointment. To schedule a tour please call (617) 426-3006 or send an email to ara_boston@academyofrealistart.com

Boston location

Located in the historic Leather District of Boston the academy has an exceptionally convenient location. South Station is only 1 block from the studio. From this transportation hub in Boston students can access Amtrak, Greyhound, commuter rail, bus and subway lines.

The Leather District is a vibrant neighborhood in Boston. Loft conversions and an eclectic mix of restaurants dot the area. The studio is nestled amid a small collection of charming buildings that housed leather manufacturing operations at the turn of the 19th century. They showcase the distinctive architecture of their time, New England red brick and cast iron construction with tall plate glass windows. The Rose Kennedy greenway helps to cocoon the neighborhood in greenery.

Historic and charming are the two words that best describe the cobblestone city of Boston. It’s a small city with easy access to the Atlantic Ocean. It is filled with museums, sports teams, and a multitude of historically significant sites. Its’ energetic pace comes in part from a large student population who live in the city while taking advantage of a myriad of world-class educational institutions.
